AMMONIA

In a fully mature aquarium ammonia and ammonium should be rapidly converted by aerobic nitrification into nitrite and then nitrate and finally into nitrogen gas, the nitrogen cycling process (also known as the biological cycle).

BORON

Increment: 0.5 ppm. Marine use only. Performs: 25 tests.

Too high a boron concentration can upset many essential biological processes while too low a boron concentration can result in a very low growth rate of corals and calcareous algae. Natural seawater contains between 4.4 - 4.8 ppm.

CALCIUM

Increment: 10.0 ppm. No magnesium interference. Marine or freshwater use. Performs: 50-100 tests.

Calcium and carbonates are essential to all coral growth. If either becomes deficient, coral growth will cease, followed by a rapid decline in coral health. Calcium content should not fluctuate by more than 15 mg/L from the optimum range of 420 - 450 mg/L.

IODINE

Measures all inorganic forms of iodine. Range: 0 - 0.15 ppm. Marine use only. Performs: 40 tests.

Natural seawater contains approximately 0.06 ppm. Iodine occurs as several different forms including iodide, iodate, molecular iodine and hypoiodite. Iodide is essential for dense populations of invertebrates or soft corals.

KH/ALKALINITY

Range: 0.3 - 32.0 KH or 0.11 - 11.42 meg/L. Increment: 0.3 dKH or 0.1 meq/L. Marine or freshwater use. Performs: 100 - 200 tests.

The degree to which a solution maintains its pH when acid is added is termed the "alkalinity" of the solution. The pH value in a reef tank has a major impact on the growth of corals and calcareous algae and on the health of fish and invertebrates.

MAGNESIUM

Range: 30 - 1500 ppm. Increment: 30 ppm. Marine use only. Performs: 50 tests.

Magnesium is an essential element of chlorophyll which is necessary for photosynthesis. Without photosynthesis plants, algae and coral would not be able to survive. Magnesium also helps to maintain the correct combination of calcium concentration and alkalinity as it slows down the formation of calcium carbonate which can absorb many important trace elements within the aquarium.

NITRATE

Measures total nitrate as a function of nitrate-nitrogen (N03-N). Low Range: 0.2 - 10.0 ppm. High Range: 2.0 - 100.0 ppm. Marine use only. Performs: 50 tests.

. The build up of nitrate can result in unwanted algae growth and a slow down of coral growth.

OXYGEN

Corals and marine fish require very high levels of oxygen concentration because of the low solubility of oxygen in salt water. It is very important to regularly test the level of oxygen present. The Salifert Oxygen Profi-Test is extremely fast, measuring oxygen levels in just a few minutes and is scaled from 2 - 14 mg/L.

pH

If phosphate is present in too high a concentration there may be an increase in growth of undesirable algae and decrease in the growth rate of corals and calcareous algae by as much as 90%.

STRONTIUM

Range: 0 - 40.0 ppm. Marine use only. Performs: 40 tests.

Strontium is utilized by corals in the same manner as calcium and holds a similar importance in maintaining a vigorous level of growth. It is most useful in densely populated aquariums.
